Welcome to Hayling Island

Nestled on Hampshire's stunning south coast, Hayling Island is a coastal gem offering the perfect blend of natural beauty, family-friendly beaches, and a laid-back seaside atmosphere. Connected to the mainland by a road bridge and a historic rail bridge, this charming island destination provides a wonderful escape whilst remaining easily accessible from major cities including Portsmouth, Southampton, and Chichester.

With over four miles of unspoilt sandy beaches, scenic coastal paths, and a rich maritime heritage, Hayling Island has long been a favourite destination for families, watersports enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful coastal retreat. The island's south-facing position ensures excellent sunshine hours, making it one of the sunniest locations on the south coast, perfect for beach days, coastal walks, and outdoor adventures throughout much of the year.

Whether you're looking to spend your days building sandcastles with the children, windsurfing on Hayling Bay, exploring the island by bicycle, or simply relaxing in a waterside holiday home with stunning coastal views, Hayling Island offers something special for everyone. The island maintains a wonderfully relaxed pace of life whilst providing all the amenities and attractions you need for a memorable holiday experience.

Coastal Beauty

Beautiful Beaches & Coastline

Hayling Island boasts some of the finest beaches on the Hampshire coast, each offering its own unique character and appeal. The south-facing sandy beaches stretch for miles, providing ample space for sunbathing, beach games, swimming, and paddling even during the busiest summer months. The gentle sloping beaches make them particularly suitable for families with young children, whilst the consistent winds and waves attract windsurfers and kiteboarders from across the country.

West Beach, located towards the western end of the seafront, is a Blue Flag award-winning beach renowned for its excellent water quality and facilities. This beach is particularly popular with families, offering clean golden sands, traditional beach huts, and easy access to cafés, ice cream parlours, and the Hayling Seaside Railway during summer months. The promenade provides a lovely setting for a leisurely stroll whilst enjoying views across the Solent towards the Isle of Wight.

East Beach, or Eastoke Beach as it's locally known, is famous throughout the watersports community and has been described as the "windsurfing capital of Britain." The consistent southwesterly winds create ideal conditions for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing. Even if you're not participating in watersports, watching the colourful sails dancing across the water provides spectacular entertainment. The beach here is slightly quieter and offers a more natural, unspoilt atmosphere perfect for peaceful walks and beachcombing.

For those seeking tranquillity, the northern shores of Hayling Island offer peaceful shingle beaches and mudflats that form part of Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. These quieter stretches are excellent for birdwatching, with the harbour providing important habitat for wading birds and wildfowl. The coastal paths here offer stunning views across the harbour, with opportunities to spot seals basking on the mudflats during low tide.

Several bike hire shops on the island make it easy for visitors to enjoy two-wheeled exploration without bringing their own equipment.

For golf enthusiasts, Hayling Golf Club is a prestigious links course offering challenging play alongside stunning coastal scenery. Established in 1883, it's one of the oldest seaside courses in England and provides an authentic links golf experience. The island also features crazy golf facilities perfect for family fun, particularly at Beachlands amusement park, which has been entertaining families for generations with traditional seaside rides and attractions.

Nature lovers will appreciate the Hayling Billy Trail, a peaceful walking and cycling route that follows the path of the former Hayling Billy railway line across the island. This flat, traffic-free route is ideal for families with young children and provides access to some of the island's quieter corners. The trail connects to the extensive network of coastal paths surrounding Chichester Harbour, offering endless opportunities for exploration and wildlife spotting.

The island's sailing heritage is celebrated at various yacht clubs and marinas dotted around the shoreline. Whether you're an experienced sailor or fancy trying your hand at something new, several sailing schools offer tuition and equipment hire. Stand-up paddleboarding has also become increasingly popular in the calmer waters of Chichester Harbour, providing a gentle introduction to watersports with stunning scenery as your backdrop.

For those interested in local history, St Mary's Church dates back to the 11th century and features remarkable Norman architecture. The island's maritime heritage can be explored through various historical plaques and information boards positioned around the coast, telling the stories of smugglers, sailors, and the D-Day preparations that took place on these shores during the Second World War.

Dining options on Hayling Island range from traditional fish and chip shops and beach cafés to more sophisticated restaurants showcasing fresh local seafood. Getting Here

Travel & Access

Despite its island status, Hayling Island is remarkably accessible. The A3023 road bridge provides the main vehicular access from the mainland at Langstone, with good road connections to the A27 and A3(M) making it straightforward to reach from Portsmouth, Southampton, Chichester, and beyond. The journey from Portsmouth city centre takes approximately 20 minutes by car, whilst London is roughly 90 minutes away via the M3 and A3.

For those travelling by public transport, regular bus services connect Hayling Island to Havant railway station, which sits on the main London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour line. From Havant, it's a short bus journey onto the island, with services running throughout the day and into the evening. During summer months, additional services operate to accommodate the increased number of visitors heading to the beaches.

Once on the island, getting around is pleasantly straightforward. The compact size means nowhere is particularly far, and the flat terrain makes cycling an excellent option for exploring. Several businesses offer bicycle hire, including children's bikes, tandems, and family carrier bikes. Local bus services also operate around the island, though many visitors find that walking or cycling provides the most enjoyable way to discover hidden corners and appreciate the coastal scenery.

Parking is available throughout the island, with seafront car parks providing convenient access to the beaches. During peak summer weekends, arriving earlier in the day ensures the best choice of parking spots. Many of our holiday accommodation properties include private parking, removing any concerns about finding a space after a day out exploring.
